Concept
Drives Design
|
First of
all, what exactly does the marketing / advertising
mantra, Concept Drives Design, really mean…and is there
actually a Concept driving your Website?
THE
CONCEPT IS THE IDEA
The Concept
is the Idea, the Impression or the Theory that underlies
everything that appears on the Website. It is the reason for your Website’s existence.
I was speaking just today to a new Web Design
client who summed it up perfectly.
He said that he wanted his Website to provide a
visual experience of the area in which he sells homes.
Precisely!
ISN’T
THE IDEA TO GENERATE LEADS?
Yes, of course it is but if you truly let the Concept
drive the Design, leads will be generated.
Imagine a Website that truly provides a visual
experience of the area.
Then imagine a competitor’s Website that provides
a visual experience of the agent or the team or a logo.
Which concept or image do you think will have more
appeal to a prospective buyer?

| Too
many advertisers and sales people claim to be
The Best. There
is the best detergent, the best Website, the best
movie and so on but they cannot all be the best so
the term becomes meaningless.
The movie industry has the Oscars so at the
end of the season there is one movie proclaimed The
Best but wait, there is Best Picture, Best Actor,
Best Screen Play written by a One Armed Man and
…you get the picture.
That pun was definitely intended.
THE
BEST WEBSITE
The
best Website for you is one that best meets the
needs of your customers and prospective customers.
So, starting with the Concept that should
drive your Web Design let’s look at some Best
Websites. If

IS HOW CONCEPT DRIVES DESIGN
What
if the concept for your Website is to be a total
resource for anyone who wants to buy a condominium
in your area; can you imagine how that might affect
your design? Or,
what if the concept for your Website is to provide a
site where homeowners can get an idea of their
home’s current value and other facts that
prospective sellers are so hungry for?
Can you see that this Website will look and
behave quite differently from the first one?

What
Search Engines Say About it |
|
As
you might imagine, search engines have a thing
or two to say about what they consider to be good
Web design. And, if you are someone who wants to get front-page exposure
on one or many search engines, you had better
listen to what they have to say.
CONTENT
IS KING
Search
engines trust the words on your Web page to tell
them what the site is about.
So does that mean that all the fancy talk
earlier in this newsletter about creating a visual
experience of an area is simply a bunch of hooey? Not at all! It
is true that search engines like words and do not
even see the lovely visual experience we might
plan for people, which means that for an effective
Website, you have to have both.
SPIDERS
WANT WORDS, PEOPLE WANT PICTURES
Good
Web design lets you have both the visual
experience for your human audience and the
necessary words for the search engine’s spiders.
The realities of the Internet insist that
we Web Designers must strike a balance between
pictures and words because too many pictures can
make the site download slowly and too many words
make the site boring.
