Seeing
is Believing
|
Apparently
more than half of what we believe about others and our
environment is based on what we see.
In warfare, if the enemy does not see the advancing
army wearing camouflaged uniforms, the results could be
fatal. In the marketplace, if your prospects fail to see your
Website or your direct mail postcard as something of
interest, your results will be disappointing.
It is no wonder then that the study of visibility
is so important to all of us.
WHAT
PEOPLE DO NOTICE
Graphic artists and Web designers who understand graphic
arts should have a pretty good sense of what gets noticed
and what doesn’t. These
elements need to be incorporated into your Web design and
all your advertising materials in order for you to gain
the maximum benefits.
Used intelligently, these design rules help create
an effective Website.
If they are over-used, the effect is annoying and
off-putting. Here
are seven design factors you need in order to get noticed.
FOUR
WAYS TO GET NOTICED
Shape:
A shape that does not blend into the environment is
noticed immediately.
Imagine a lone, 80-foot tree surrounded by miles
and miles of desert.
Movement: A slight movement on a static Web
page will draw attention. Multiple sources of movement are
offensive.
Reflection: colors that absorb light are less
noticeable than colors that reflect light. Army camouflage
colors are drab while bright colors reflect light and are
noticed.
Variation: Artists have known for centuries that a
well applied balance of lights and darks get noticed far
more than a solid color.
Variation in design or pattern is just as important
as variation in color.

Applying
the knowledge gained from the science of
visibility should lead to a very important
conclusion about choosing a template Website or
template marketing
materials in general.
In other words, the very LAST thing you
should do is select marketing and advertising
strategies that look and say and do the same thing
as everybody else. Why? Because the
more you look and say and do the same thing as
everybody else, the less likely it is that prospects
will notice you.
And, since developing a custom Website is so
easy, it makes good sense to set yourself apart. To

WE
TRAIN OURSELVES TO AVOID ADS
I
conducted a survey earlier this year to find out how
many people actually click one of the sponsored
sites when doing an online search for information.
My survey was not very large but it was very
revealing. Out
of 173 real estate agents and brokers I asked, only
two (2) said they had ever or would ever click on a
sponsored Website.
The reason most of them gave for not clicking
on these sites was that they knew those sponsored
sites were ads.
In a larger survey in which the general
population was asked, 70% said they would never
choose to click on a sponsored Website. The irony
here, at least for my survey, was that in every case
I was talking with a real estate agent or broker who
wanted me to help them get their Website in the free
section of the search engines AND they knew their
Website was an ad.
BUT
WE LOVE BEING FOOLED
It is
not that we don’t like ads. Most of us actually enjoy ads that are clever, interesting or
useful. What
we dislike are ads that say and do the same old
things in the same old ways and that expect us to
choose their product or service when they have not
done anything at all for us…not even gone to the
trouble to differentiate themselves from all the
other ads we are exposed to each day.

If
things are not complicated enough for those
trying to figure out how best to tap into the
power of the Internet, it gets even trickier when
you add the search engine component. You can forget about Motion, Variation, Reflection,
Movement and Shape when it comes to pleasing the
search engines. And, if you truly want to tap into the power of the Internet
you cannot afford to ignore the fact that your
Website has to please human prospects and search
engine robots.
A
TALL ORDER
Search
engines are interested in the words on the page
and in the number of significant Websites that
link to you.
Do people read every word on your Web page?
Probably not!
People generally focus on Headings,
Captions and bulleted items.
Do search engines read every word on your
Web page? Yes,
that is what they are programmed to do.
Now, having said that, it is possible to
create a Web page that is so long, and scrolls
down so far that no search engine will follow but
unless you go to extremes, search engines will
read what you say or what your Web designer says.
Do people care about how many other
Websites link to your site?
NO! People
rarely ever check to see who is linking to you but
search engines judge your importance by how many
other significant Websites link to you.
On the other hand, do search engines care
if your Website uses a variety of shapes and
attractive colors?
NO!
CAN
YOU DO BOTH?
This
is actually the wrong question because if you do
not do both your Website will not succeed.
The real question is ARE YOU DOING BOTH
NOW? If
not, please call me toll free at 888-814-5347 or

You can have an effective Web strategy and
within the budget you can afford.
